Album Review
Metallica:  St. Anger
By Heferito

I honestly don't understand what all of the negative press is about.  Metallica's latest offering, titled St. Anger,  is full off hard-hitting heavy speedmetal.  Isn't that what all of you fellow Metallica fans have been waiting for?  Gone are the bluesy country riffs, the heavy power chords that established Metallica are back with a vengeance.

If you are familiar with The Garage Days LP then listening to St. Anger should bring back pleasant neck-whipping memories of that album.  The music is full of raw an unpolished fury.  If I didn't know better then I would have thought that Bob Rock was no longer producing their albums.

Have you been wondering through the past 4 studio albums if Lars still has his double-bass pedal?  The answer to that question becomes blazingly apparent as he lays down drum speed that we have not heard from him since the vicious finale at the end of One.  His drums have an overall different sound, his snare seems to be a different style than we are accustomed to.  It took me several times through the disc to get used to it, but now that I have I am once again a believer.

James holds nothing back when it comes to "getting his scream on."  At several points on the album you can tell that he is not necessarily concerned with having the type of harmonic sound that was prevalent on the Black Album.  His voice can only be described as raw fury, much like you will find on The Garage Days.  Understandable since he's been holding it all in for the past ten years.

Tracks 6 and 7, titled My World and Shoot Me Again are shining examples of how a metal band can reinvent themselves with great success.  There is an intense mix of music styles, ranging from sweet slapping bass to incredible chord progressions that remind me of Master of Puppets

So the verdict?  If you are like me and have been waiting for Metallica to strap their balls back on, then get the hell out there and buy it!  Listen to the album 2 or 3 times and I strongly suspect that you will find it growing on you.
