Random Simpsons Quote:
Old people don't need companionship. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

Baseball Sucks.

Well, it's official, the players of Major League Baseball have decided to set a strike date of August 30th.  What a bunch of idiots.  Apparently they haven't noticed that attendance for the game is already down.  I am sure that a work stoppage (or just the threat of one) is going to increase everyone's desire to shell out more money to the poor underpaid whiners.

I find it somewhat amusing that Baseball has 2 definitions of the word strike.  They happen to appear right next to each other in the dictionary.  Let's take a look at the definition that is being used most often lately.

  • strike  (strk)
    v. struck, (strk) struck, or strick·en (strkn) strik·ing, strikes
  • a.  A cessation of work by employees in support of demands made on their employer, as for higher pay or improved conditions.
  • b.   temporary stoppage of normal activity undertaken as a protest

Is it just me or is an average salary of 2.5 millions dollars a pretty far cry from poor working conditions.  I wouldn't say that really justifies protesting for higher pay.

I am a lifetime die-hard baseball fan.  I have watched and played the game since I could walk.  This type of greed is not what the sport about.  You could learn a lot about baseball by watching Little League.  The players listen to their coaches and each other.  If the team needs a sacrifice fly or bunt you won't hear any complaints.  It's a team sport after all.

The point I am trying to make is the the players of MLB have in inflated view of their value to the game.  They are not irreplaceable.  A new league can be built, or other leagues can be watched.  I would just as easily pay 3 bucks to go watch the local Collegiate Baseball Team play as I would tune in to watch the Sox and the Yankees.  The game will survive.  But I have a feeling that it will never be the same again, at least at the pro level. I sincerely hope that the current players are looking into some good correspondence schools.  They never deserve to play the game again.
